Building a sustainable software business requires generating revenue on an ongoing basis. Traditionally, this has been accomplished through paid updates (e.g, Microsoft Office 97, Office 2000, Office 2003, and so forth). On the App Store, however, paid updates are not well supported, and are not a viable option. My talk will first look at the business models that are possible on the App Store. Paid up-front apps, freemium apps, paymium apps, and all of the variations possible within these themes (one-time or consumable in-app purchases, non-renewing vs. auto-renewing in-app subscriptions, time limited trials, etc.) will be explored. Which of these options can be used to build a sustainable business on the App Store, and how? I will share our experiences with AnyList, which we have built into a successful and sustainable software business on the App Store.
